How to use Turnitin ?

●Blue: No matching text
●Green: One word to 24% matching text
●Yellow: 25-49% matching text
●Orange: 50-74% matching text
●Red: 75-100% matching text
The above is a categorisation of Turnitin’s repetition rate. Most students’ articles will be in the Green range. But is 24% really a uniform plagiarism line? Is plagiarism considered plagiarism if it is higher than 24%, but no problem if it is lower than 24%?
In fact, Turnitin marked out the 24% is not “there was 24%plagiarised”, but to let the reader (tutor) to compare the repetition and the connection between the orig-inal text, so as to judge whether the repetition is reasonable.
So why is the same repetition (e.g. 24%) reasonable in some cases and talked about in others?

■ Situations of reasonable repetition!

1) Correct and reasonable references
O When the repeated part has correct as well as reasonable direct or indirect references, it can be repeated.
2) Commonly used expressions
O Some expressions will be frequently used by everyone and will likewise be marked by Turnitin, such as “In conclusion, the study identified the follwing…'”
3) School cover page
Some schools will issue a cover page, which can be repeated.
4) Reference list/ Bibliography
The literature in the Reference list/ Bibliography can be duplicated.

■ ■ Unreasonable duplication!

X Misquoting.
Some students directly quoted the author’s original sentence, but used the indirect quotation format, this will be judged as plagiarism.
O Tip:Direct quotes with double quotation marks 1 are generally not judged as repetitive.
OParaphrase followed by no Reference
As mentioned in the last issue, paraphrase is generally used to ask for a citation and must be followed by Reference.

OMisuse of direct quotation

Some students think that as long as they master direct quotation, then the whole text can be directly quoted.
In conclusion, unless the school has a hard and fast rule on the repetition rate, don’t put a so-called “10%” or “20%” plagiarism red line for yourself.
In addition, a low repetition rate also means that the article may not have enough literature to support the ideas. I hope you have an objective and rational perception of repetition rate and plagiarism.
I hope you will have an objective and rational understanding of repetition rate and plagiarism, and use Turnitin to check for reasonable repetition and revise unreasonable repetition.

I hope all students are well, and if you have any difficulties related to your studies, you must kick the little tailor ah!
