Are you all busy writing the first draft of your dissertation these days? Don’t worry if you have encountered strict supervision from your tutor, the next thing I want to share is the tutor’s writing strategy, which I hope will be helpful to you.
First of all, to make it clear, don’t some of you like to start writing from the abstract and then follow the structure of the thesis down? In fact, this practice is not only time-consuming, but also may lead to logical confusion. Therefore, I suggest that you build the main structure of the paper first, and then add the beginning and ending parts.
The first step is to study the literature in depth.
For students who are new to dissertation writing, studying and imitating excellent literature is the most direct and effective way. Every time you read the literature, especially those related to your research topic, make sure to taste it carefully and summarise the structure of thinking in it and how the parts are introduced, how the parts transition from one to another, etc. For the outstanding ideas and theories and paragraph statements, you can record them to stimulate your own thinking and find potential application opportunities.
Step 2: Build an overall framework model.
Although not every tutor will require every student to outline an essay for their review, we should still pay attention to this step. With the guidance of the framework, the writing process will be smoother and the structure will be clearer to avoid running out of ideas.
Generally speaking, undergraduate essays should be structured and laid out according to the following basic logical order: abstract → introduction → theoretical overview → analysis of the current situation → explanation of the problem → countermeasures and conclusion.
A simple way is to find two to three suitable literature, according to your topic, and integrate and modify on this basis.
The third step is to write an introductory essay.
The introductory essay includes the background of the study, the purpose of the study and the research methodology, which have already been written in detail in the opening report stage. Now you only need to add and improve them according to the literature you have collected. The research background can be explored in depth from both theoretical and practical levels to reveal the necessity of the research;
The purpose of the research should clearly point out what you want to study and what effect you hope to achieve; as for the research method, if you have difficulties, you can refer to the expressions in the relevant literature.
The fourth step is to enrich the other main contents.
By deeply analysing and summarizing the specific environment and problems faced by the research object in the real society, elaborating your unique theoretical perspective, combining the material arguments, deducing the conclusion of the paper or providing targeted countermeasure suggestions, and highlighting the substantial contribution of the research.
The fifth step is to add an abstract.
The abstract is to outline the main content of the whole paper.
Here you need to briefly introduce the background, introduce the key topic to be researched, then elaborate the methods and means used in the study, summarise the results obtained from the study, and finally sublimate and draw conclusions, the character count is about 300 words will do.
